Kicking off more travel posts this month! I’ve been so delayed in sharing our recent travels with the craziness of the holidays. But this week’s wet weather is not only reminding me of our UK trip, but also giving much needed time to write!
If you recall my earlier post on Scotland {see here}, we stayed in Edinburgh a few days and used it as the home base to explore the country. One of the days, we took a drive to Inverness which is about a 2.5 hour drive north of Edinburgh. The Northern part of Scotland is known as The Highlands. It is an area of immense natural beauty and a rich history.

John wanted to see Loch Ness and I, of course, wanted to check out a castle. If Loch Ness sounds familiar to you, it is because you have probably heard of the Loch Ness monster, which is based here. We set out to visit Urquhart Castle – ruins off headlands of the lake in the town of Inverness. The castle dates back to medieval times and has seen such amazing history. It has been visibly weathered and partially destroyed by wars and other conflict, but you can still imagine the life that surrounded it at one point. I just love to be in the presence of such history. It is so beautiful to me. And overlooking a magnificent lake is just kudos on my tourist scale!
Traveler tip: while the drive might be so amazing to get there, the castle is pretty easy to find. There is a parking lot for easy access and the information center has a very nice view point as well as a cafe for a quick bite! Feel free to comment or email me with any questions.
