Santa Ynez, and its wineries has always held a special place in my heart. Maybe it’s because of my fondness for the movie Sideways, or maybe because it is one of the first weekend getaways I took with my then boyfriend (now husband), but I never miss an opportunity to get up there and create more memories. Over the years I have come to love many of the wineries, however, when pressed (pun intended), I’d have to say these 3 are my faves from our last visit:
1. Foxen: When I think of what defines Central Valley Pinot Noir, it is embodied in Foxen’s reserve Pinot Noir. While they’ve moved their Pinot flight away from their rustic 7200 tasting room, the new building is beautiful and definitely has some charm especially experienced when sitting outside and watching the hummingbirds on a beautiful day….of course, while sipping on some great wines. Make sure to spend a little more to get the reserve Pinot tasting, it will be worth your while. Also, the owners dogs makes frequent visits so we can add cuteness factor in there as well.
2. Riverbench: We stumbled upon this winery when as asked the nice people at Foxen for a great place for sparkling wine. Once we arrived we were immediately taken by the adorable house. The views and the atmosphere of Riverbench make it an experience of its own. With a tasting room and outdoor area that overlooks the awe-inspiring Santa Ynez mountains and the Valley Vineyards, the winery provides its guests with a majestic experience that can only be summed up in your favorite romantic comedy. A great place to bring your family to picnic, or to simply sit and reflect… with wine of course.
3. Fess Parker: One of the more famous names in the area, and normally for the estate than the wine, but this place has come a long way. They now are serving only their reserve wines on the tasting, and the diversity of wines they pour leave your pallet fully satisfied. What makes this place so great is the general atmosphere. From their often comedic pourers to their wide open grassy knolls, this is the place to take your family, enjoy playtime and picnics on the lawn, and enjoy wine with no pretention.
Again, there are so many we love and the list keeps on growing. More than likely, we’ll be up there in a few weeks so let us know your favorites!
