I am still going through hundreds of pictures from our trip. With the holiday craziness, it is taking me a bit longer to share. But it was such an amazing trip, I will definitely post more in the next weeks!
Today, I’m sharing some fun photos from our time in Alba and Borolo, Italy. This northern Italian wine region of Piedmont was John’s must-stop destination. The countryside is beautiful and the wines are amazing so it was definitely worth the stop. It was a nice change from the hustle of Milan.
November is truffle season so I actually planned a truffle hunting exercrusion for John’s birthday. If you are not familiar with truffle, it is actually a fungus, similar to a mushroom, and is highly prized as food. They are hunted in the forest, and some variations can for thousands of dollars per ounce! Some people hate the same and taste, but we happen to love it. I think it is an acquired taste since the flavor and smell is very distinct and pungent. Anyway, I had planned a truffle hunting trip in the forest with a guide, but it was rainy and foggy, so the trip was canceled. To be honest, I wasn’t sure how I felt about hunting in dirty, mud and cold in the forest anyway, but I was wanted to do a special experience for John. Let’s just say I wasn’t completely bummed we had to cancel it. 🙂 We ended up going to the International Truffle Fair which was happening in the town of Alba. It was a pretty amazing experience. My mind was blown at all the different kinds of truffle there was. We grabbed lunch at the fair, and of course added truffles to every dish. It wasn’t a fine dining experience by far, but getting a few shavings of truffles on each plate ended up being one of the most expensive meals we’ve had. AND we didnt even purchase drinks yet. But I must say it was worth every penny. It was so delicious that we actually bought raw truffles to make dinner with that night. You pick out truffles like you would wine or diamonds, so it took John awhile to pick out just the right fungus to take. ha! It was such a fun experience. Little J had fun as well. I really thought he would be the only child at the fair, but NO! There were tons of kids. I love Italy because everything is so family friendly.
The town of Alba is so charming. I guess you can say that of all Italy. The small towns are littered with cobblestone streets, high end boutiques and delightful wine caves and delis…..you can spend the entire day there eating and drinking your way to happiness.
